Supporting Wellness for Tribal Child Care Providers

  • May 1
  • 2 min read

Tribal child care providers play a vital role in supporting the growth, development, and well-being of Native children and families. This work is meaningful—but it can also be demanding. Balancing caregiving responsibilities, program requirements, and community needs can take a toll on physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Supporting provider wellness is essential to sustaining strong, healthy child care systems.

Wellness is not just about rest—it’s about creating balance across all areas of life. This includes physical health, emotional well-being, connection to community, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. When providers feel supported and cared for, they are better able to show up fully for the children and families they serve.

Creating Space for Provider Wellness

Supporting wellness can take many forms. Some programs have created simple, accessible spaces or opportunities for providers to recharge—whether through self-care resources, peer connection, or wellness activities. These efforts don’t need to be large-scale to be meaningful.

Examples of supportive practices include:

  • Sharing simple self-care tips and wellness resources

  • Creating opportunities for providers to connect and build relationships

  • Offering activities that promote relaxation, reflection, or creativity

  • Providing access to trainings or conversations around mental health and well-being

Even small efforts can help providers feel seen, valued, and supported in their work.

Strengthening Connection and Community

Wellness is deeply connected to relationships. Creating opportunities for providers to gather, share experiences, and learn from one another can strengthen both individual well-being and the broader community. Whether through informal gatherings, trainings, or shared activities, these moments help reduce isolation and build a sense of support.

When providers have space to connect, they are more likely to stay engaged, supported, and energized in their roles.

Centering Wellness in Tribal Child Care

For Tribal communities, wellness is holistic—it includes mind, body, spirit, and connection to culture and community. Supporting provider wellness is not an added task, but a foundational part of sustaining strong programs and supporting the next generation.

By prioritizing wellness, Tribal child care programs can create environments where providers feel supported, children receive high-quality care, and communities continue to thrive.
