As children grow, learn, and explore the world around them, their curiosity grows too. From

climbing and running to opening cabinets and exploring outdoors, little ones are constantly discovering something new. Creating safe spaces both inside and outside the home can help children explore confidently while giving parents and caregivers greater peace of mind.

Even small safety steps can make a big difference in helping prevent injuries and keeping children safe during everyday activities.

Indoor Safety Tips:

Secure Heavy Furniture and Electronics

Children love to climb, pull, and explore. Make sure televisions, dressers, shelves, and wall decorations are secured to stable surfaces to help prevent tipping or falling.

Keep Small Items Out of Reach

Small toy parts, loose batteries, coins, and similar objects can become choking hazards for young children. Regularly check floors, bags, and play areas for items little hands may find.

Choose Safe Toys and Household Products

When possible, choose toys, paint, and makeup products that are labeled non-toxic and lead-free. Young children often touch and taste objects as part of learning about their environment.

Use Window Guards and Safety Locks

Install window guards on upper-level windows and use childproof locks on cabinets containing:

  • cleaning supplies,

  • medications,

  • vitamins,

  • detergents,

  • or sharp objects.

Keeping dangerous items stored high and out of reach can help prevent accidental poisoning or injuries.

Be Mindful of Choking Hazards

For younger children, avoid foods that are small, hard, or round, including:

  • whole grapes,

  • popcorn,

  • nuts,

  • or hard candy.

Cutting food into smaller pieces and supervising mealtimes can help reduce choking risks.

Keep Important Numbers Nearby

Posting the Poison Control number somewhere visible can help families respond quickly during emergencies.

Outdoor Safety Tips:

Use the Right Car Seat Every Time

Always buckle children into a properly installed car seat during travel. Car seats should match your child’s:

  • age,

  • height,

  • and weight.

Many local fire stations, hospitals, or community programs can help families check car seat installation if needed.

Stay Close Near Streets and Parking Lots

Young children may want to walk independently, but traffic areas can be dangerous. Holding hands, using strollers, or giving children simple choices can help them feel included while staying safe.

Watch Children Closely Around Water

Even shallow water can be dangerous for little ones. Always supervise children closely near:

  • bathtubs,

  • pools,

  • rivers,

  • lakes,

  • buckets,

  • or water play areas.

Protect Children From Heat and Sun

Summer activities, powwows, playground visits, and outdoor gatherings can mean long hours in the sun. Help children stay safe outdoors by:

  • offering water often,

  • taking breaks in the shade,

  • wearing sunscreen,

  • and dressing in lightweight clothing.

Encourage Handwashing

Handwashing helps reduce the spread of germs, especially before meals and after outdoor play. Helping children build healthy habits early can support wellness year-round.

Small Safety Steps Matter

Children learn by exploring the world around them, and accidents can happen quickly. Taking small steps to create safe environments at home, in the car, and outdoors can help families feel more prepared while allowing children the freedom to learn, play, and grow.

At NICCA, we recognize the important role parents, caregivers, and Tribal communities play in helping children stay safe, healthy, and supported every day.
