Spring is here, bringing warmer weather, longer days, and more opportunities for outdoor
play and exploration. As children spend more time outside, it’s also important for child care providers and caregivers to stay mindful of seasonal health and safety considerations.

Spring weather can change quickly, with sudden rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. Make sure children are brought indoors at the first sign of severe weather, especially when thunder or lightning is present. Having a clear plan for transitioning inside and keeping children engaged during indoor time can help ensure safety and reduce stress during these moments.
Seasonal allergies are also common in the spring. Pollen levels can be high, which may cause sneezing, itchy eyes, or discomfort for some children. Providers can help by monitoring symptoms, encouraging regular handwashing, and communicating with families about any allergy concerns or needs.
As outdoor play increases, it’s important to take simple precautions:
Ensure play areas are safe, clean, and free of hazards
Dress children in layers to adjust to changing temperatures
Encourage frequent handwashing, especially after outdoor activities
Check for ticks after time spent in grassy or wooded areas
Stay hydrated, even during mild weather
Water play may also begin in the spring. Always provide close supervision around any water activities, including small pools or containers. Children should always be within arm’s reach during water play, as accidents can happen quickly and quietly.
Spring is a wonderful time for children to explore, learn, and connect with the outdoors. With a little preparation and awareness, providers can create safe, engaging environments where children can enjoy the season to the fullest.
