With summer coming soon, many families are preparing for vacations, powwows, family visits, and other travel adventures. While tablets and phones can help pass the time during long drives, road trips are also a great opportunity to connect, laugh together, and keep

children engaged through simple games and family activities.
These favorite family road trip games are easy to play in the car, encourage creativity and conversation, and can help make travel memories your children will remember long after the trip is over.
I Spy
A classic game that never gets old.
One player chooses something they can see and says: "I spy with my little eye something that is…”
They then describe the object using clues like color, shape, or size while the other players try to guess what it is.
To make it more challenging for older children, players can ask “yes” or “no” questions before guessing.
The Alphabet Game
Players work together to find every letter of the alphabet in order using road signs, license plates, stores, or billboards.
Younger children can play a modified version by looking for colors of the rainbow or specific items like:
three blue cars,
a water tower,
or an animal crossing sign.
Mixed-Up Storytelling
This game encourages imagination and lots of laughter.
One person starts a story with a single sentence. Then each player takes turns adding to the story one sentence at a time. The sillier the story becomes, the better.
You can also create themed stories inspired by:
places
animals,
foods
Can You Draw What I Describe?
Each player gets paper and something to draw with.
One person describes an object, place, or animal without naming it while the other players try to draw what they hear. Once everyone is finished, compare drawings and see how different each interpretation turned out.
This game works especially well during rest stops or snack breaks.
Create Your Own Car Game
Let children help invent their own road trip game.
Using playing cards, road signs, or things they spot outside the window, families can create fun rules such as:
“If you see a red truck, everyone claps twice.”
“If someone spots a horse, they tell a joke.”
“If you pass a river, everyone names their favorite food.”
Kids often enjoy making up the rules just as much as playing the game itself.
Sound Detective
One player secretly makes a sound while everyone else closes their eyes.
The other players then try to guess what made the sound. Sounds can include:
jingling keys,
tapping on the window,
crinkling paper,
snapping fingers,
or making animal noises.
This simple game helps younger children practice listening skills while having fun together.
Making Memories Along the Way
Road trips are not only about reaching a destination — they are also an opportunity to spend time together, laugh, talk, and create memories as a family.
Simple games can help children stay engaged while making long drives feel a little shorter for everyone. Sometimes the moments children remember most are the songs, stories, and laughter shared along the way.
